How Does A Search Engine Work?

September 19, 2009 Posted by Admin

Web search engines are one of the finest inventions of mankind by which we can make maximum use of the World Wide Web. Through them we can search anything on the internet with maximum ease and convenience. We just have to type our search criteria and several links are in front of us to view.

The search engines works on storing information from many web pages and they are retrieved from the World Wide Web. They can be retrieved through a web crawler. The Web crawler is a web browser which can record every link it sees.

When we enter a query into the search engine then it indexes and provides us with the best matching web pages which match the search criteria. The result generally comes with a link followed by a short summary and a title for the document. Boolean operators like “And” “Or” or “Not” are generally used by most of the search engines to satisfy the search query.

There are millions of web pages which can have the word that we have put it in the search criteria but the results that come out from the search engines are not in millions but they are very few. The reason for this is that every engine filters out the best possible match for the search. Now how a search engine does that depends entirely on the technology on which it’s working and it also changes over time with the change in the internet use and the new developments that are coming our way.
